Board of Directors


The Board is comprised of five (5) members, one (1) each from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania Mainland, Tanzania Zanzibar and  Uganda.

Ms. Patricia Ntahorubuze is the Rule of Law Project Manager and Gender Specialist at United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and previously a Coordinator of the Burundi Women Lawyers Association and a Magistrate in Bujumbura, Burundi. She has a Degree in Law and a Degree in Gender. She is specialized in project management and evaluation especially from a gender perspective.

Chairman

Independent legal consultant in governance, child rights and protection and human rights; and media commentator and analyst on legal, constitutional and political issues. He holds a Bachelor of Laws. He has engaged in numerous consultancies involving training, materials development, and facilitation in Kenya, the region, Europe and the United States. He was a member of the Committee of Experts that developed Kenya’s 2010 constitution; and previously worked with the Children’s Legal Action Network of Kenya and volunteered with the Mathare Junior Centre. His good work in human rights has earned him various awards among them the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS), and Shujaa Wetu (Our Hero Award) and a nominee of the Pwani Human Rights Award. He has served on various Boards.

Country Director and Lead Consultant at Sung Consultants, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; part time lecturer at the School of Law at the University of Dar es Salaam and Associate Trainer at the MS TCDC, Arusha, Tanzania. 

He is a holder of a Masters of Law in international Law and Law of International Organizations; a Post Graduate Diploma in Law; a Bachelor of Laws and has attended various short term courses. He is an experienced researcher, trainer and public interest lawyer and boasts a two decade long working experience as a State Attorney and strong advocate of human rights from years of working as Director of Advocacy and Reforms at the Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC), a lead human rights civil society organisation in Tanzania. He has engaged in consultancies in various countries in Africa and other parts of the world. He is a member of a number of organisations and professional institution.

    Dr. Mzuri Issa Ali (Tanzania Zanzibar)

    Board Member

    Director of the Tanzania Media Women Association, Zanzibar. Formerly, acting Director in the Directorate of Communications in the President’s office; Assistant Press Secretary to the President; and a sub-editor and reporter at Nuru newspaper.

    She holds a Doctorate in Social Sciences; a Masters of Arts in Political Science and International Relations; and a Degree in Mass Communication. She has vast experience in the field of communication and is an ardent advocate of women’s rights.

      She is a researcher and lecturer at the School of Law.  She has researched extensively on socio-economic rights such as access to water and sanitation services; access to social services and the interaction between social services and electoral politics; and how environmental rights interact with human rights.  

      Qualifications: PhD (Wits); LLM (Cantab); LLB (Mak); Diploma in Legal Practice (LDC).
